The immediate aim is relief from pain, which could involve a temporary dressing, draining an abscess, or prescribing medication. We then arrange a follow-up to provide a permanent solution.

While waiting for the appointment, you can take steps to manage discomfort. Rinsing with warm salt water helps clean the area and reduce inflammation. For swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol help reduce the pain, but do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum as it can burn tissue. If you have lost a filling, a temporary filling kit from a pharmacy can cover the exposed area. For a knocked-out tooth, handle it by the crown, rinse gently, and try to reinsert it into the socket or store it in milk until you reach us.

Recovery depends on the treatment provided. Most procedures involve mild tenderness for 24 to 48 hours, managed with standard painkillers. We provide instructions based on the situation, such as eating soft foods or adjusting your cleaning routine. For example, after an extraction avoid vigorous rinsing for 24 hours to protect the healing blood clot. Red flags requiring immediate contact: Call our practice if you experience increasing severe pain after two days, persistent bleeding that does not stop with pressure, or swelling that spreads to the neck or eye during office hours (Mon/Wed/Fri 9-5, Tue/Thu 11-7). For emergencies outside these hours, such as severe swelling affecting breathing, you should visit A&E or call 111.
